| Synopsis | At the social center for the elderly "Casa del gufo" is the stage for the "Ortobello" trophy, the first beauty contest for vegetable gardens. The competition is a chance to talk about the local urban gardens and its protagonists: 84 years old Peppino is a widower for more than twenty years and spends lots of time in the garden because he would have nowhere else to go; 92 years Guido is a retired truck driver and goes to the garden to smoke cigarettes hiding from his wife; Luciano, the favourite to win the final because his garden was a perfect organization. Between the telling of the life stories on the bench and the irrigation of the land, we are witnessing a race for life: the relationship between the biological existence of man and nature, between the incessant urge of the time, fading people but blooming plants, vegetables and flowers. The competition becomes an excuse to tell the stories of the elderly protagonists, developing a narrative about life that becomes collective, public and universal memory. (Italian) Al centro sociale per anziani “Casa del Gufo” va in scena il 1° trofeo “Ortobello”, prima gara di bellezza per orti. La tenzone diventa una scusa per raccontare gli orti urbani comunali: c’è Peppino cha ha 84 anni ed è vedovo da più di venti anni e va nell’orto perché non saprebbe dove altro andare per passare il tempo, c’è Guido camionista in pensione di 92 anni che va nell’orto per fumare le sigarette di nascosto dalla moglie, Luciano, il favorito per la vittoria finale perché il suo orto ha un’organizzazione perfetta. Tra i racconti di vita scambiati sulla panchina e l’irrigazione della terra, si assiste ad una gara per la vita: il rapporto tra l’esistenza biologica dell’uomo e la natura, tra l’incessante incalzare del tempo che appassisce le persone ma che rende vive piante, ortaggi e fiori.
