| Synopsis | JUS (ASINUS) is a film about one of the most symbolic animals of Brazilian Northeast, the donkey. According to researchers, the equus asinus has its origin divided into two groups, the European and the African donkey. In Brazil, the donkey began to be domesticated on a large scale mainly in Brazilian Northeast. Ceará is the state that has a strong emotional and historical relationship with the species, turning the donkey into a folkloric, symbolic and controversial character. Father Antonio Vieira was a strong supporter of the donkey and in 1964 published the book "The Donkey, Our Brother”. Some local artists like José Clementino and Luiz Gonzaga joined the priest in the defense of the animal, and even Brigitte Bardot supported them to defende the animal. Unfortunately, the donkey is becoming increasingly obsolete, being replaced gradually by bicycles and motorcycles. So, the donkey has been abandoned to its fate, dying of hunger, thirst and car accidents in Brazilians highways. The story of the donkey is rich in legends. The Holly Bible cites the donkey more than 130 times. In Brazil, the legendary story of Damião do Jegue became famous in the early 1980's when Damião tried to donate his donkey to Pope John Paul II. Therefore, JUS (ASINUS) is not only a documentary that will tell stories of donkeys, but a film that seeks to denounce the indiscriminate killing of an animal suffering by nature and bordering on extinction, but at the same time, mate, and docile worker who has helped the northeast people along its history.
